Guide to PortugalWhere to find the golden plains of the Alentejo, the green valleys of the Douro wine-making region or the sunny beaches of the Algrave? In Portugal! This outstanding child-friendly country is located on Europe's Western edge so unfortunately, only few tourists visit it every year. But those who decide to come to Portugal won't be disappointed! Uncrowded cities, nice and pleasant weather, moderate tariffs for food and hotels, many tourist attractions and monuments are very good reasons for visiting Portugal!
Porto, the capital, is the second largest city in the country, built into the granite cliffs and the mouth of the river Douro. It has a very various architecture, there are Roman, Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassic and Renaissance buildings.
One of the major monuments is an outstanding cathedral founded in the 12th century and extensively altered in the 18th. You shouldn't miss a Gothic church Igreja de Sao Francisco whose facade is totally plain but the interior is wonderfully gilt. Below the church there are catacombs and museum that are absolutely worth visiting. Porto is also proud of its amazing iron bridge, Ponde de D. Luis, that was built by a disciple of the famous Eiffel. After visiting you can enjoy yourself in smoky bars and seafood restaurants along the waterfront in the Ribeira do Porto.
Brief, in this picturesque country everybody will find something that interests him!
